Be part of it

Every hour you give matters.

Just as small financial contributions help something grow,
the time people give to HALTO
is of invaluable worth.

HALTO is built on people who give their time

HALTO is built on people who give their time.
Time that does not need to be measured.
Time that is simply there – in whatever way it is possible.

Getting involved with HALTO does not mean knowing right away where you fit in.
It does not require fixed commitments, a set amount of time, or a perfect plan.

Some people accompany others.
Some offer presence in everyday life.

Others contribute their thoughts or support quietly in the background.

Every way of being has value.

HALTO is intentionally intergenerational.

Different life stages, experiences and possibilities come together here.

If you find your way here, you are welcome to take your time –
to look, to feel, and to ask questions.

Everything can grow.
Nothing needs to be decided right away.

Companion

Purpose of the role

You support individuals and families in finding their way through the system
and in not having to face difficult steps alone – calmly, discreetly and on equal footing.

Role description

As a HALTO companion, you take on a bridging role.
You help structure information, organise processes and clarify next steps –
without taking over tasks or decisions on behalf of others.

The guiding principle is:
enabling together, not replacing.

The role includes three areas:

- Forms & everyday administration (working through things together)

You support people in understanding and structuring documents
(e.g. sorting paperwork, clarifying questions, gathering information, filling in forms together).

You do not act on behalf of the person,
but enable them to navigate the process themselves.

- Orientation & connection to services and organisations

You familiarise yourself with relevant services and organisations in order to guide people appropriately:
Who is responsible? Which service fits the situation? Where can reliable information be found?

If needed, you support in preparing contact (e.g. drafting an email or phone call),
without acting as an official representative.

- Preparing and reflecting on important appointments – with optional accompaniment

You support preparation (e.g. structuring questions, notes, priorities)
as well as follow-up (e.g. summarising, identifying next steps).

If desired and agreed, you may accompany someone to an appointment –
as a calm and supportive presence.

Discretion, confidentiality & data protection

Absolute discretion is the foundation of this role.
Volunteers commit to respecting confidentiality and complying with applicable data protection regulations,
as well as handling personal data with care.

Volunteer qualities

  • calm, respectful and patient attitude

  • strong listening skills and ability to stay within one’s role

  • clear role awareness: supporting, not taking over

  • reliability, care and discretion

  • willingness to engage with the support network (services, organisations, responsibilities)

Requirements

  • at least 18 years old

  • availability by agreement (occasional or flexible support)

  • willingness to respect HALTO’s framework, roles and boundaries

  • openness to learn about the local support system (with guidance from HALTO)

What HALTO offers

  • coordination of requests and matching

  • clear agreements and framework for each engagement

  • introduction / training (role, boundaries, communication, processes, support network)

  • a contact person and ongoing support during assignments
